president obama and his challenger governor romney squaring off in their first presidential debate. but take a look at the real clear politics average of the latest national polls. this, this is the gap that mitt romney has to close in the next five weeks if he is to win on november 6th. topping our political headlines right now, vice president joe biden is on the campaign trail in the critical swing state of florida. as we mentioned a few moments ago. he talked about the gop ticket in ft. myers. >> what they're doing these days, if you notice, they're not talking anymore more about what paul ryan and governor romney are really for. they're spending an awful lot of time telling you what we, barack obama and joe biden are against and what we've done. and they just attack everything. >> the republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan also has a very busy day. congressman ryan is going to have a rally in ohio in just a couple of hours. more on that in just a moment. this morning, though, he was in derry, new hampshire. >> all these promises were made in the idea of hope and change. and peo

. the problem for mr. romney, well, presidential elections are decided by electoral votes. and in that puzzle, mitt's chances are starting to crumble like a poorly constructed game of genga. it's still a close race in virginia and florida, with the president up by two in the old dominion. it's ohio with the president opening up a lead of eight points in the buckeye state, where voting is under way. with ohio joining pennsylvania, are iowa and new hampshire turning increasingly blue, that puts the president at 265 electoral votes. mitt romney would have to run the table of every other swing state to get to victory. and clearly, romney's so-called supporters are now reaching for desperate measures. >> on the eve of the first presidential debate, a bombshell is about to be dropped on the white house because tonight you'll hear from barack obama like you've never heard from him before. >> oh, yes, that was the introduction last night before fox aired tape of a 2007 speech by then-candidate obama to a group of black ministers in which he criticized the response to hurricane katrina and provided ce

october and in particular the next five days that could prove decisive in this presidential campaign. indeed, after a cruel summer that extended well into september, mitt romney is now in the air on his way to denver. more desperate than ever to shake the etch-a-sketch and restart his campaign with a must-win debate on wednesday. much is at stake with the latest battleground polls showing romney losing by 11 points to the president. with the first face-off looming on the horizon, romney finds himself saddled this monday with fresh doubts placed in his mind by the only two people he's ever proposed to, starting with paul ryan. >> first of all, 47% mitt acknowledges himself that was an inarticulate way of describing how we're worried in that stagnant obama economy more people are becoming dependent on economy. >> what could be better for the emotional stability of a presidential candidate than your running mate calling you inarticulate? never mind. paul ryan is the one key numbers guy. so let's hear him explain the tax policy. >> the cut in tax rates is lower -- all american tax rates
